General (7)
Soft Drinks, Phosphoric Acid, and Bone Density

This issue has received a lot of attention in the last 20 years because of the dramatic increase in soft drink consumption (thanks Coca Cola and Pepsi). But as it turns out, the loss of calcium appears to be due to the caffeine content of soft drinks and the fact that these beverages  have replaced milk in the American diet.
A well-controlled clinical study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition using calcium-balance methods found no impact of soft drinks containing phosphoric acid on calcium excretion. The study compared the impact of water, milk and various soft drinks (two with caffeine and two without; two with phosphoric acid and two with citric acid) on the calcium balance of 20- to 40-year-old women who customarily consumed ~3 or more cups (680 ml) of a carbonated soft drink per day. They found that, relative to water, only milk and the two caffeine-containing soft drinks increased urinary calcium, and that the calcium loss associated with the caffeinated soft drink consumption was about equal to that previously found for caffeine alone. Phosphoric acid without caffeine had no impact on urine calcium, nor did it augment the urinary calcium loss related to caffeine.

I am an aging athlete. Any suggestions for supporting my body?

What would be best? Active Male, Prime, Xtra? These are excellent choices. You might find Rhythmatix and Level G very beneficial as well. Consider a ninety day trial. At the end of the book, The Metabolic Plan, there is a section offering guidelines for self care. Find the section that pertains to your age group and activity level. Having your fasting blood sugar levels checked is among the guidelines, along with a few other key elements. Get your clinician involved and make a health plan. Keep us posted on your progress!

What can you offer for women going through menopause?

A woman entering menopause might want to consider presenting Female Formula plus Postmenopausal Formula and Prime to her women's health specialist/hormone specialist. She may want to have her DHEA sulfate levels checked, along with vitamin D. Vitamin D can be important for bone density. At levels between 50 and 100, anticancer and bone building benefits of vitamin D have been documented in the medical literature. She may also have a comprehensive hormone profile tested. A good clinician in this field, local to the Olympia area, is Dr. Natalie Kather, MD. Dr. Kather specializes in women's health and hormone health for men and women. Other products to consider include Xtra for energy and GoVera if she is an active person. (GoVera is not for people who are sitting on the couch).

Q: What is the conversion formula that will help us to convert the Canadian units for DHEA-sulfate lab values to the American values (“X”), so that we can compare our labs to the reference range values in the Metabolic Plan?

A: It's back to algebra for us!!

Here is the equation:

Solve for X:

__  (140 microMoles per Liter)__    =     __Canadian Value__
            2400 micrograms per deciLiter                             X

Solve for X.
X is the American value equivalent.

So, simply put: two steps.

1) multiply your Canadian value by  140 mM/L,

2) then divide that number by  2400 micrograms/dL.

The trick is to keep your UNITS straight. If anyone creates a simple plug-and-go system for this, please email it to AskStephen@univera.com . Thanks!

If I am getting my DHEA-sulfate measured in a lab test, how should I take my Prime supplement beforehand so as not to alter the test result?

To have your DHEA-S measured, simply wait 8-12 hours after your last Prime supplement before taking the blood test.

If your lab test is in the morning, then taking Prime the night before and SKIPPING any morning supplementation until after the exam, will produce the most accurate test results.

By following this method, the test results will reflect your body in the supplemented state, which is the goal.

Is it a problem if the products freeze?

No.

Are Univera products cGMP certified?

Yes.

cGMP stands for current Good Manufacturing Practices. All companies of dietary supplements are required to be compliant with the FDA's cGMP regulation. All of Univera manufacturing is compliant with the regulation, and some of our manufacturers have third party GMP certification. cGMP third party certification is not required.

Is the phosphoric acid in Xperia a problem?

Phosphoric acid is commonly used in foods and beverages for stability, flavor and product safety. One ounce of Xperia contains about 30 mg of phosphoric acid, which is entirely harmless. In comparison, a soft drink contains approximately 30 times that amount, or a little less than 1,000 mg.
In any discussion of acids and bases, it is important to remember that the critical element is concentration. Naturally-occurring acids like citric, tartaric, acetic and phosphoric acid abound in the food supply. A one ounce serving of a vinegar and oil salad dressing will contain about 1,200 mg of acetic acid. The orange juice you had for breakfast contained over 2,000 mg of citric acid. Even more important for this discussion, the acid produced by your stomach every day, in terms of concentration and amount, is thousands of times greater than the phosphoric acid in Xperia.

Is maltodextrin gluten free?

Maltodextrin is gluten free. It can be made from a variety of starches, including corn, potato, rice or wheat. However the source does not matter because maltodextrin is such an ultra-purified polysaccharide that the protein is removed, rendering it gluten free. If wheat is used to make maltodextrin, "wheat" will appear on the nutrition label. Even in this case, the maltodextrin would be gluten free.

Our maltodextrin is made from corn. However, through the ultra-purification processing methods emplyed, there is no remnant of corn whatsoever, so this product is generally recognized as edible by the corn-averse and corn-allergic. Nevertheless, if a consumer is exquisitely allergic to corn, such that s/he has to be rushed to the hospital upon consuming anything relating to or containing traces of corn, we recommend avoiding products containing maltodextrin.

Protectin, why is it in 5 different products? What is so special about it

Protectin might arguably be the most important natural ingredient we have developed in the last twenty years. It is present in Xtra, Xperia, Regenicare, Regenifree, and Vitality. It is a tissue specific anti-inflammatory. In contrast, Ibuprofen, NSAIDS, aspirin, Celebrex, etc. are systemic anti-inflammatories. They suppress inflammatory activity system-wide, including some of the healthy activity we actually need in our body, such as that involved wound healing. A study published by New Scientist, Dec 18, 2010, shows that cancer cells trick immune cells by sending the same stress signals as a wound, and thus are left unattacked, and are free to create more cells.

Q: What is titanium dioxide?

A: Titanium dioxide (TiO2), an ingredient in MetaPower and Rhythmatix, is an inert ingredient used to lend whiteness or opaqueness to a variety of products, including cosmetics, lotions, foods, drugs and nutritional supplements. TiO2 is a component of many gelatin and vegetable-based capsules because of its ability to make clear gelatin capsules opaque. This ingredient is included in MetaPower and Rhythmatix to protect the sensitive ingredients from light.

TiO2 is very safe. Its safety has been tested in numerous studies, and TiO2 has shown to be non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) Report on Carcinogens, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have each affirmed that TiO2 is not listed as a potential carcinogen.

Further, a recent study fed animals a diet containing TiO2 for 130 weeks, at dietary concentrations as high as 5%, no evidence of either toxicity or carcinogenicity could be found. They concluded that dietary exposure to TiO2 does not pose a risk to human health.¹

Q: Does adding DIM help to raise progesterone?

A: I don’t think so. DIM (di-indoyl-methane) is used in MetaFuel for its documented role in healthy estrogen metabolism, in both men and women.

DIM is derived from broccoli and other Brassica family vegetables. For more information, please refer to the FAQ titled: What is the role of the DIM in weight loss products?

Can curcumin in RegeniFree be properly absorbed, even though it is not enteric coated?

Yes. However, curcumin is not considered highly bioavailable, so it does require repeated dosing in order to produce measurable amounts of curcuminoids in plasma and tissue.

Here is an abstract from a research performed by the Gastrointestinal Cancer Research Laboratory, Department of Internal Medicine, at the Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center and Baylor Research Institute, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX, United States.

Abstract
Although turmeric (Curcuma longa; an Indian spice) has been described in Ayurveda as a treatment for inflammatory diseases and is referred by different names in different cultures, the active principle called curcumin or diferuloylmethane, a yellow pigment present in turmeric (curry powder), has been shown to exhibit numerous activities. Extensive research over the last half century has revealed several important functions of curcumin. It binds to a variety of proteins and inhibits the activity of various kinases. By modulating the activation of various transcription factors, curcumin regulates the expression of inflammatory enzymes, cytokines, adhesion molecules, and cell survival proteins. Curcumin also downregulates cyclin D1, cyclin E and MDM2; and upregulates p21, p27, and p53. Various preclinical cell culture and animal studies suggest that curcumin has potential as an antiproliferative, anti-invasive, and antiangiogenic agent; as a mediator of chemoresistance and radioresistance; as a chemopreventive agent; and as a therapeutic agent in wound healing, diabetes, Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and arthritis. Pilot phase I clinical trials have shown curcumin to be safe even when consumed at a daily dose of 12g for 3 months. Other clinical trials suggest a potential therapeutic role for curcumin in diseases such as familial adenomatous polyposis, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, hypercholesteremia, atherosclerosis, pancreatitis, psoriasis, chronic anterior uveitis and arthritis.

Thus, curcumin, a spice once relegated to the kitchen shelf, has moved into the clinic and may prove to be "Curecumin".
What is the role of the DIM in weight loss products?

DIM (di-indoyle-methane) is derived from broccoli and other Brassica family vegetables. There is a great deal of research on this compound in terms of its effects in cancer pathology. In the MetaFuel weight balancing system, we are utilizing the DIM for its roles in healthy estrogen metabolism in both MEN and WOMEN. In short, estrogen metabolites called the 2-hydroxy estrogens are known to promote the loss of fat and the maintenance of muscle. Other metabolites called the 16-hydroxy estrogens have been associated with negative metabolic effects. Interestingly, humans produce less of the "beneficial" estrogens and more the 16-hydroxy metabolites as we age. Studies have shown that, in humans, supplemental use of DIM promotes higher levels of the 2-hydroxy metabolites, i.e., the fat-loss promoting, muscle-maintenance supporting estrogen metabolites.

I am concerned about soy. Which products contain high amounts of soy protein?

Some proucts contain a small amount of soy protein mixed with an ultrafiltered whey (lactose-free, casein-free).

For a detailed list of ingredients in any product, go to UniveraScience.com and click on Products.

Soy has become a controversial subject over the years. To address soy, Univera's Chief Science Officer, Stephen Cherniske, has written a two-part article called Soy Story. You can access the articles at UniveraScience.com. Go to Articles & White Papers and click on Soy Story parts I and II.

Which products contain milk, lactose, or casein?

MetaFuel and Essentials are products which contain milk. However, because the milk proteins used have been ultrafiltered to separate out the casein and the lactose, we can say that these products are lactose free and casein free, and this basically means that they lack the allergenicity of milk products.

I am concerned about artificial sweeteners. What can you share for more information?

Sucralose is biochemically inert. This means that it is not absorbed by the body. Sucralose will not accumulate in the system or cause any damage to the body during digestion. Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar, but does not promote tooth decay. The ECONET science teams have read all scientific reports that have been published on sucralose. Extensive biomedical scrutiny (including that of the US, EU, Canada, and Japan) has deemed sucralose safe. It is valuable to note that in its 13 years on the market, none of the proposed hazards regarding the safety of sucralose consumption have occurred.

For reference, one Splenda packet contains 11.9mg sucralose (that’s 0.0119 grams). One serving Xtra contains less than one-tenth that amount.

On sorbitol:

Sorbitol is a slow-metabolizing sweet substance derived from fruits, corn and seaweed. Although sorbitol is not an alcohol, it is classified as a sugar alcohol. Sorbitol is 60% as sweet as sugar and because it is very slow to be metabolized by the human body, sorbitol does not cause insulin levels to increase as much as sugar. Also, sorbitol does not lead to tooth decay.

Xtra contains 0.035grams of sorbitol. A stick of gum contains approximately 1.25 grams sorbitol. The FDA considers 50 grams daily to be the upper limit of safe consumption. However, in some, digestive issues such as diarrhea can occur with as few as 10 grams a day of the sweetener.

For more information, please see UniveraScience.com, under the heading Articles and White Papers. Look for title: The Sweet Truth. This article will give valuable information about sucralose, sorbitol and other sweeteners.

What is the source of Glucosamine in the Joint Health for Pets

Shrimp and Clam Shells

How much sugar is in the Xtra?

Three (3) grams. Approximately the sugar content of one-quarter of a small apple.  All the sugars are derived from fruit.

FYI:

The difference between FRUIT sugar (fructose) and refined sugar
(sucrose) is as follows.

Fruit sugar is something known as FRUCTOSE

Fructose is broken down by the body slowly and is converted into
SUCROSE and GLYCOGEN.

Fructose has a low Glycemic Index (GI 23) relative to cane sugar (GI 100).

The current Wikipedia website search for FRUCTOSE explains it well.

Are the ingredients used in Univera Products GMO free

Yes

Do Univera products contain preservatives?

Certain nitrate-free preservatives can found in fruit and berries, and have been demonstrated by the FDA, USDA, and national scientific bodies as safe for consumption. Nitrate-free preservatives provide significant benefits for the consumer and none have been found to be harmful when used appropriately. Univera is committed to the use of preservatives only when there is a compelling consumer safety need AND the ingredient has been widely observed as having no adverse effects.

Preservatives used in liquid Univera products are all GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the USDA and FDA, including minimal amounts of sodium benzoate (benzoic acid), citric acid and potassium sorbate (sorbic acid). Importantly, these natural compounds are found in berries and other fruits. Sorbic acid is very effective against yeast, and benzoic acid inhibits the growth of mold and bacteria. Both have significant antioxidant activity. In other words, berries and other fruits manufacture these organic acids to protect themselves. We add a little more of these ingredients to Aloe Gold®, MetaBerry®, Xtra™ and Xperia™, to protect the beneficial polysaccharides in these products.

For valuable information on safety, please see univerascience.com Articles & White Papers title: The Truth About Preservatives.

Do sodium benzoate and citric acid combine to form benzene?

It appears that this reaction can happen under conditions of high heat or

pressure, neither of which are used in the manufacture of Univera

products. Importantly, extensive testing by an independent laboratory has

shown from zero to 4 ppb (parts per billion) of benzene in Univera products.

Four ppb is less than the FDA allows in purified drinking water.

Q: Regarding the inclusion of nitrates, niacin and sulfate in the Xtra & RegeniCare. I am sure that there is sound scientific rationale behind it but have been unable to locate this information.

Please be assured that there are no nitrates in Xtra or RegeniCare.

The niacin (Vitamin B3) is included in the amount of 9 mg per serving to assist with cellular energy production. While it is true that some people experience a harmless but bothersome “niacin flush” with doses greater than 30 mg, this is unlikely to occur at such a low dose. The other form of B3 (niacinamide) does not cause flushing at any dose. To date, we have sold more than 4.5 million bottles of Xtra and have yet to hear from someone who reacted to the niacin.

There are no sulfated ingredients in Xtra. Please note that RegeniCare does contain glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate. These are natural compounds, compounds which are stabilized with a sulfur molecule, and are thus termed sulfates. There is widespread confusion regarding the terms sulfate, sulfite and the class of medication known as sulfa drugs. A sulfate is any compound containing the element sulfur, which is an essential nutrient found in most cells of the human body. For a complete review of this rather complex but important issue, please visit univerascience.com Articles and White Papers, and see the fact sheet entitled Sulfate, Sulfite Sulfa.

How is Protectin different in its effect on TNF, such that it avoids the risks associated with pharma TNF inhibitors

Pharma TNF alpha inhibitors (most widely used = Embrel) work by binding irreversibly to practically all TNF in the body.  They also cross the blood/brain barrier and thus have been shown to be effective in the treatment of occasional forgetfulness.  The limitation has to do with the effect of essentially abolishing TNF activity, which plays an important role in phase one immunity.

"Good news Mrs. Jones.  Your husband remembered your name.  However, he just died of pneumonia."

Protectin does NOT have the same mechanism of action.  It works at the transcription level, reducing gene expression for TNF alpha and other inflammatory proteins in the COX and LOX pathways.  Remember that our goal was never to turn these genes off, but to restore gene expression to that seen in healthy, symptom-free 30 yr olds.  This is a sensible target, and one that maintains the immune activity of TNF as well as the ability to synthesize prostacyclin from COX-2.

Remeber also that the level of gene expression seen in people with inflammatory disease is orders of magnitude greater than that seen in healthy age-matched controls.  Thus there is tremendous room for improvement simply by normalizing gene expression and restoring balance to these important pathways.

What effect does the Green Tea have in Xtra?

Xtra contains 220 mg of green tea extract per serving, which contains a maximum of 7% caffeine.  So at the maximum, one ounce of concentrate or a 3.3 oz mini will provide only 15 mg of caffeine.  That's the equivalent of a sip of coffee (regular brew coffee contains 100 mg caffeine per 6 oz cup). In addition, because green tea also contains theanine, caffeine effects are counteracted and little, if any, stimulation actually occurs. Theanine contributes a relaxing property unique to green tea. The caffeine-counteraction effect of theanine is the subject of currect chemical study.

What is the source of your DHEA?

DHEA is derived from the Mexican Wild Yam plant.

How Much Aloe Gold can I take in one day?

You can take 6 or more ounces per day, as needed; however, we recommend no more then 2 ounces at one time.

Products (21)

Questions concerning the use of products.

Does Aloe Gold or any other aloe product contain laxative effects from the aloe?

Short answer: No. AloeCorp was the pioneer in removing laxative compounds known as antiquinones within aloe vera gel. The absence of this molecule is now an industry standard, making aloe a non-laxative product. For the scientist: We guarantee less than 10 parts per million of these antiquinones.

More: It is true that the RIND of the aloe leaf contains chemicals commonly referred to as aloe latex. This latex does have laxative properties. AloeCorp pioneered the technology to REMOVE aloe latex from aloe vera gel, and guarantees that there is less than 10 ppm (parts per MILLION) of aloe latex in AloeCorp products. They did this 14 years ago, and shared the technology with the entire industry. Thus, no one eats aloe latex today. No reputable aloe product intended for oral use contains aloe latex.Research that includes aloe latex is thus irrelevant at best and fraudulent at worst.  It is sometimes used to discredit the natural product industry with a fabricated argument. The NTP study – which made headlines in Winter of 2010, is irrelevant, in that researchers simply liquified whole aloe leaves and fed the material to lab rats for two years. This material contained more than 6,000 ppm of aloe latex, and resulted in the growth of tumors in these hapless animals.  You could easily kill rats by feeding them rhubarb leaves or apricot pits. That’s why we don’t eat rhubarb leaves or apricot pits. Nor do we eat aloe latex. Bad science can only result in confusion. One has to wonder why this non-issue continues to make headlines.

Does Xtra contain C3G and PQQ?

Q: Does our product, Xtra contain C3G (cyanidin-3-glucoside )?  This is the pigment in the anthocyanin family of flavonoid molecules. If so, what is the amount in the product?. Also, has there been any discovery in our products of the compound pyrroloquinoline quinone or PQQ.  This is supposed to be an antioxidant which has the capacity to provide extraordinary defense against mitochondrial decay and recently found to stimulate the growth of fresh mitochondria. If there is any information on this in our products?

A: C3G is an anthocyanin inherent in berry concentrates. Xtra utilizes two concentrates which are good sources of this  compound: Blueberry and Black cherry. Cranberry is a moderate source, but we have not done QA on every flavonoid in the product. So we do not have measures for the exact milligram amount of C3G per serving of Xtra.

We have had discussions about PQQ, a quinolone coenzyme that appears to protect mitochondrial function (and in animal studies, has restored it). Since this coenzyme is present in most uncooked vegetables and fruits, our feeling at the present time is that a highly varied natural foods diet will provide sufficient PQQ. It is important to note that the animal data regarding PQQ is coming from experiments in which rodents are given standard lab diets where fresh food and vegetables are largely absent.

Is the whey protein isolate in Essentials considered milk?

By our standards, NO.

Not only is Essentials lactose free AND casein-free (these are the allergens most common in milk and milk products), but the whey isolate (the only dairy-derived element in Essentials), is also free of the pro-inflammatory, indigestible antigens that are claimed to be the root of unhealthy implications of milk consumption. Essentially, a clean whey protein isolate could arguably be considered a dairy-free protein source, as there is no dtectable association or connection to animal cell products or anything relating to intact "dairy" products. Modern science is truly remarkable in this way, as a clean whey protein isolate has many medical uses in the areas of immune health, gut health as a prebiotic and anti-inflammatory benefits.

So, what is whey? Whey is the liquid leftovers from the production of cheese from milk. As it begins, it is pretty unappealing. This liquid contains a number of undesirable items such as fat, cholesterol, lactose, broken down proteins, etc. It also contains intact peptides--chains of amino acids such as leucine, valine, lysine, etc.--building blocks of protein found everywhere in nature. It is these INTACT, "undenatured" chains of amino acids that you want to separate out totally from the rest of the whey, and consume. This is whey protein isolate. Now, the processing technique is very important, as that will determine how well you extract everything else from the isolates you desire. So, whey isolate is an ultra-filtrate of whey, which yes, originates from milk, but, once filtered, is nothing but a string of pure amino acids. Importantly, even rBST the bovine growth hormone that is present in some sources of milk, gets filtered away in the isolation process. So to me, this is a CLEAN FOOD, all around.

On Essentials in particular: here are some interesting points described in the White Paper, Univera Products for the Sports and Fitness Professional:

Univera’s Essentials™ is a new generation of sports nutrition, with tremendous advantages. Using ultrafiltration and enzyme hydrolysis, most of the protein has been reduced to di and tri-peptides, a particle size with low allergenicity and almost immediate bioavailability. Likewise, the essential fatty acids (EFA’s derived from cranberry seeds) have been reduced to nanospheres that are 100% water soluble. This product is lactose free.

Combining the fruit source carbohydrates with soluble fiber, protein and EFA’s moderates the glycemic effect, and the formula is completed with vitamins and whole food-derived minerals.

The energy demands of strenuous training results in increased oxidative stress, and evidence suggests that, for athletes, the subsequent need for antioxidants exceeds the amount provided by even the best diet. (Howatson, 2008) (Marzatico, 1997) (Child, 1998). As such, antioxidant status can have a profound influence on physical performance. (Chawla, 2007) (Wright, 2008).

The superfood ingredients in Essentials™ provides remarkable antioxidant benefits, owing to both the comprehensive group of compounds and their potency. Independent testing has given Essentials™ an ORAC score of 9,450 per 6 oz serving; the antioxidant power of approximately 25 servings of fruits and vegetables.

Go Vera: I am not an athlete. Do I still need electrolyte beverages when I am active or excercising?

MYTH. Everyone needs electrolytes.

FACT: Electrolyte sports drinks (e.g., Propel, Gatorade) are appropriate for athletes who lose fluids through profuse sweating. Most individuals going to the gym do not incur these sorts of extreme sweat loss. Athletes are particularly vulnerable to electrolyte loss because of the extreme loss of volume that takes place during strenuous training and events.

FUN PHYSIOLOGY FACT: A loss of two or more percent of one's body weight due to sweating is linked to a drop in blood volume. When this occurs, the heart has to work harder to move blood to the lungs and muscles, which can cause muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue and even heat stroke.

TRY THIS AT HOME: To get a clear picture of your hydration needs, I recommend a simple strategy:

*  Weigh yourself before and after your workout. If you have lost more than a pound or two, it is probably water-loss. So look at the color and volume of your urine. A large amount of light colored urine means you are still hydrated. Dark colored, concentrated urine probably means you need to drink more fluids.

Go Vera: This has no sugar. Don't sugared sports drinks improve performance?

MYTH. Sugared sports drinks improve performance.

FACT: Sugared sports drinks only help during ENDURANCE events. That is, strenuous exercise lasting more than an hour. In light of this, these sorts of products are appropriate for about 5% of users. For the other 95%, sugared sports drinks can be detrimental in that they rapidly elevate blood glucose levels, producing an insulin response that can lower blood glucose (storing them away), just when you need it to be available most.

Q: Is it ok/ an added advantage to combine Go-Vera with an electrolyte drink or other electrolyte-added H2O?

Some advantages include:

1. Ribose contributes to energy production but will not elevate blood glucose levels. In fact, even gram quantities of ribose given to diabetics has been shown to help normalize blood glucose levels.

2. MCT’s also feed directly into the Krebs cycle, helping fuel exercise without stimulating insulin production or adversely affecting blood sugar levels. Think of MCT’s as rapid, easy energy. So easy that they are used in formulas for newborn babies.

3. Maca, cissus and rhodiola are longer-term bioenergetics with cumulative benefits. No other sports drink provides this extraordinary three-phase energy support.  With consistent use, in other words, you get results that build to higher and higher performance levels.

What can you tell us about the mechanism of action of Level G?

Based upon the properties of the ingredients, it appears that a combination of the following clinically observed mechanisms could be at play:

increasing insulin sensitivity; increasing liver gluconeogenesis; increasing GLUT4 translocation in peripheral tissues for enhanced glucose utilization; increasing mobilization of fat stores leading to the release of more energy (and potentially preventing hypoglycemic lows).

This is our best speculation. Without high level blood testing, live biopsies and tissue studies for molecular study, one can never really know.

We are confident about the safety of the product, but we can make no promises for efficacy in any population.

With Level G, the recommendation for use is:
Continue to test normally to determine your nutrient needs
. Monitor your progress with your clinician, as he/she may choose to monitor lab values (such as HgbA1c or Fructosamine, fasting glucose/insulin values).
Share your health regimen and health supplements with your dotor: inform him/her that you are using Level G (a nutritional supplement) and that you expect positive benefit.

If I were an ultra-marathoner or other elite athlete interested in Univera, which products should I start with?

A: Stephen's suggestions:: About half an hour before your next training, mix and consume some of the following: 1 mini Essentials + 1 mini Xtra, + 9 ounces water. That will give a mixture ratio of about two-thirds Univera to one-third water. Take some of this, as you would water, 30 minutes before the training, and take note of your performance and how you feel.

Longer term, in terms of improving overall performance, the recommendation would be Prime.
Q: Will Super Immune help to manage herpes cold sores?

A: An outbreak of herpes can be a sensitive barometer of your immune competence. These blisters usually occur in times of stress (sunburn, lack of sleep, other stress).

Lysine supplementation has been studied for its feasibility as a herpes cold sore therapy.

Tip from Stephen: ask your doctor about Zovorax. Zovorax cream can be applied to your blister at the INSTANT you feel it coming. It is safe to use multiple times a day.
Q: Can Prime C help increase the body’s production of DHEA?

A: No. Not that we know of.

Q: Regarding the new Metagreens capsules: if we want the same benefits as taking a full serving of the Metagreens powder, how many caps should we take?

A: Nine (9) capsules will give you a full tablespoon’s worth of greens. And that’s nine capsules per day, so taking them in smaller numbers over the course of the day might be a great way to get your greens in. Stephen’s advice: be sure to drink plenty of water, for adequate assimilation.

Which Univera products are NOT vegan?

Non-vegan: Bone & Joint, Metafuel, MetaPower, Essentials, RegeniCare, Active Male, ImmunoBurst, Rhythmatix.

Why is the Essentials good for helping athletes train?

Essentials is excellent for athletes because of its macronutrients and its essential fats. Macronutrients include a complete and balanced array of carbohydrates, proteins, and polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs). Micronutrients include fiber and essential fats (EFAs). Of note, these ingredients come from premium quality, clean whole food sources that exceed USDA organic standards. From a human physiology standpoint, these ingredients are pre-digested (read: absorbable and ready to cross the gut wall in seconds-to-minutes, not hours). Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are critically important to athletes. In Univera Essentials, the EFAs are 100% water soluble, balanced in terms of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9's, and, because of the tiny particle size that they've been emulsified into, they are made available to your body almost immediately. This product is lactose-free and casein-free.

As athletes know, a cardinal rule in athletics is that you never do anything in competition that you have not already done in training. The suggestion is to try Essentials first in the training setting--for endurance and sprint-like events--and observe both your performance and recovery.

Several professional athletes have had major success with Essentials. Fields ranging from soccer, cycling, and swimming to baseball and basketball are benefiting from the RANGE and QUALITY of nutrients and, further, from the RAPID speed with which these nutrients are made available to the system.

How does Xtra compare with other companies' multivitamins?

Xtra is not a multivitamin and is not intended to be compared to a mutlivitamin. Even the highest quality multivitamin will not improve energy levels, stress, or have an impact on mental clarity. A good multivitamin will not impact the soreness and swelling of joints, either. The goal is, by consuming a highly-varied, natural foods diet, people will have no need for a multivitamin. Univera wants you to get your vitamins from your diet.

What is the glycemic index of Xtra?

We have not measured the glycemic index (GI) of Xtra. *Please see below for how GI is determined.

The following info might be helpful:

Xtra contains 3 grams sugar (all 3g are fruit based)

An average apple contains approx 12-16g sugar

Glycemic index of average apple: 31-38

Glycemic index of berries (the primary fruit source of Xtra): 32

*Glycemic index values are determined experimentally by feeding human test subjects a fixed portion of food (after an overnight fast), and subsequently extracting and measuring blood samples at specific intervals of time.

Decreased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) and diets rich in animal proteins, saturated fats and n-6 vegetable oils are associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), certain malignancies and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and renal disease. Recent studies show that reduced calorie intake and supplementation of diet with n-3 FA delays the onset of autoimmune renal disease, primarily, due to increased antioxidant enzyme activities, decreased NF-kappaB activation and decreased IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-alpha mRNA expression in the kidney tissue. Studies in rodents show that addition of n-3 FA and soy protein to diet affords protection against bone loss induced by ovariectomy in mice due to NF-kappaB expression and decreased activation of osteoclasts. Together, the available evidence show that increased daily intake of dietary n-3 FA decreases the severity of autoimmune disorders, lessens the chance of developing CVD, and protects against bone loss during post-menopause.

What does it mean if I do not feel anything after a few days taking Prime®?

The benefits of DHEA are cumulative over time.

Short-term supplementation with DHEA does not produce improvements on memory, learning or information processing. Thus it has been easy for nay-sayers to dismiss the cognitive improvement reported by people taking DHEA.  I was once accused of “cheating” on a brain scan.

It is important to realize that the benefits of DHEA are cumulative over time. In fact, common sense tells me that I would not want to ingest anything that had a dramatic and immediate effect on my brain (well, at least not since the ‘60’s).

The University of Parma (home of the most intense and innovative research on DHEA at present) has completed a three year study showing that serum DHEA levels are clearly, significantly and positively associated with cognition scores, and that the converse is also true; those with the lowest DHEA values showed more rapid and significant reduction in the Mini Mental Status Exam.

If you are looking for a mechanism of action, I would suggest new data from Russia showing that exogenous DHEA has anxiolytic activity under conditions of chronic stress. Or you could look at data regarding DHEA’s ability to protect the hippocampus. As for me, I just plan to maintain youthful levels of DHEA, keep downward pressure on TNF alpha and other inflammatory cytokines with Protectin™ and fish oil, maintain optimum levels of Vitamin D, do crossword puzzles, play Scrabble, sizzle with science, and move confidently through my 6th decade with many more to come.

"Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate derivative (DHEAS) decline with age..." [See PUBMED for more on this publication]

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate derivative (DHEAS) decline with age. The decline in DHEAS levels has been associated with many physiological impairments in older persons including cognitive dysfunction. However data regarding the possible relationship between DHEAS and cognition are scant. We investigated whether DHEAS levels are associated with presence and development of lower cognitive function measured by the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) in older men and women. 1034 residents aged >/=65 yr of the InCHIANTI Study with data available on DHEAS and MMSE were randomly selected. MMSE was administered at baseline and 3 years later. Among those, 841 completed three year follow-up. Parsimonious models obtained by backward selection from initial fully adjusted models were used to identify independent factors associated with MMSE and DHEAS. The final analysis was performed in 755 participants (410 men and 345 women) with MMSE score >/= 21. A significant age-related decline of both DHEAS levels (P<0.001) and MMSE score (p<0.001) was found over the three year follow-up. At enrolment DHEAS was significantly and positively associated with MMSE score, independently of age and other potential confounders (beta SE 0.003 +/- 0.001, p<0.005). Low baseline DHEAS levels were predictive of larger decline of MMSE and this relationship was significant after adjusting for covariates (beta SE -0.004 +/-0.002, p < 0.03). Our data show a significant and positive association between DHEAS and cognitive function, assessed by MMSE test. Low DHEAS levels predict accelerated decline in MMSE score during 3 year follow up period.

Are Univera Products Gluten Free?

Yes. The only product in question was MetaGreens, since it contains wheat grass, and even though the immature grass contains no gluten (only found in the wheat grain), we tested it anyway in case they inadvertently include some of the grains in the product. None detected. Thus the line is gluten-free.
